Travellers to A Floating World (2023)
Travellers was created in response to Catalyst, an incubation programme for associate artists of P7:1SMA. Led by Ranice Tay, a constellation of artists come together, bringing mythologies and languages from different lands (Hong Kong, Sweden, Vietnam, Belarus, Singapore). We asked: what is our relationship with our land?
What we remember of our land is both real and imagined, and most of it in childhood. Time ripens our memory; it arrives in fragmentations, and it demands no answers – only questions. Oftentimes, it comes as a strange phrase – usually from an adult – that repeats itself, a word or song that we heard once (or a hundred times) and has lived rent free in our heads as we grow up.
In similar vein, we reflect on present times. It is a scattered world, and all of us desperately trying to make meaning out of our lives. We introduce ourselves by our occupation, we tell ourselves we prefer coffee to tea for breakfast because 'that is who we are'. We search desperately 'who am I?' It is an essential and futile question.
How is something born out of nothing? And if nothing, then how something? What is that something?
In the end, there is very little left to be said of our lives.
In the end, there is only song and dance.
