Our Philosophy

WUSHIREN (吾是人) is an independent theatre collective whose aim is to align the human being and pursue the essence of existence. Our artistic practice crosses traditional martial arts, physical theatre and dance to ask the most essential questions:

‘Where do I come from?’ and ‘Who am I?’.

At the heart of humanity is the desire for homecoming, and we do so by reawakening our cultural inheritance. We think of culture as an ephemeral and porous space, no longer restricted to geography, but a stripping of masks and a meeting of palms.

WU 吾

吾 (Pronounced “Wu”) literally translates to "I” or “the self”. It is also phonetically synonymous with other Chinese characters which reflect our philosophy of the performer:

「舞」Wu from 舞台, meaning stage, the space of the dancing body.
「武」Wu meaning warrior, the one who faces his own nature.
「悟」Wu meaning awakening, the one who rises to meet his own destiny.

The word “I” refers to the self. In chinese characters, it is written as 我 or in a more ancient way 吾. The word I also looks like the chinese character 工 (gong), which represents craft / work.

With the horizontal line above representing the heavens, and the horizontal line below representing the earth. It is as if man utilises craft to have the body be a vessel to unite heaven and earth.
